100th Anniversary

Greeting from the Chair

Japan Society of Civil Engineers marks its 100th Anniversary in this November. JSCE was founded on November 24, 1914 as a civil engineering association out of the Japan Federation of Engineering Societies, that was after electrical, mechanical and architectural engineering societies were formed.

Over the past 100th years, the country has changed significantly. In the last 20 years particularly, the environment surrounding the society has made noticeable changes, and social needs have become more diversified and more complex. Many challenges are arising such as dwindling birthrate and aging population, globalization, deteriorating economy, negative development in local economy, increasing infrastructure maintenance costs, frequent natural disasters, shortage of natural resources energy and environmental problems. Civil engineering responsibilities are solving the challenges facing society, responding to social needs from a broad perspective, and improving its contribution to the development of society. We JSCE members have committed ourselves to contributing to civil engineering progress, human well-being, a sustainable future, and human-nature harmony as our mission, and have been pursing it with enthusiasm and confidence since JSCE was founded.

Keeping the mission in mind, we further strive to build “an attractive, vibrant community, country, and even world,” and to realize the society in which young generations will have hopes and dreams and get motivated to reach their dreams. We have set the three pillars of concept: “social contribution,” “international contribution,” “communication with the public,” and will be featuring them in JSCE’s 100th Anniversary Celebration events to be held from 2012 to 2014. Those events are being organized with a focus on “social contribution,” particularly “public safety and security” among the three pillars, which will make positive impact on the improvement of public safety and well-being. Meanwhile, we will expand our activities more effectively by supporting our Regional Chapters to expand their activities and strengthening communication and collaboration with International Chapter as well.

As part of the 100th Anniversary Celebration events, International activities will be carried out, such as publishing Journal of JSCE English edition, holding 100th Anniversary Commemorative Ceremony, Banquet, and International Symposium (International Forum and 3rd Roundtable Meeting) inviting many distinguished guests.

We appreciate your support and assistance and look forward to meeting you at the Celebration in November.

Sincerely,

Yozo Fujino, Dr.
